The latest Tampa Bay HealthTech Meetup brought together healthcare, cybersecurity, and technology leaders for a timely discussion on one of the industry’s most pressing challenges: how healthcare organizations can responsibly innovate with AI and data while maintaining patient trust. Hosted by Embarc Collective, the conversation featured insights from Shreesh Bhattarai, Director of HITRUST at A-LIGN; Natalie Birindelli, Executive Healthcare Strategist at CDW; Naalti Vats, Manager of Cybersecurity Governance, Risk & Compliance at Tampa General Hospital; and moderator Theodore Harvey, Co-Founder & CEO of SynsorMed. Throughout the evening, panelists explored the realities of implementing AI in healthcare, the growing importance of governance frameworks like HITRUST, and the critical role trust plays in the future of patient care and innovation.

Innovation in Healthcare Depends on Trust
A central theme throughout the discussion was that healthcare innovation cannot succeed without patient trust at its foundation. As organizations increasingly adopt AI-powered tools, connected systems, and advanced analytics, panelists emphasized that protecting patient data and maintaining transparency must evolve alongside innovation. HITRUST emerged as a recurring topic, with speakers noting how standardized security and compliance frameworks are becoming essential for healthcare organizations navigating increasingly complex cybersecurity and privacy demands.
The panel also discussed how trust extends beyond technical safeguards. Patients want confidence that their data is being used responsibly, healthcare teams need assurance that AI tools are accurate and explainable, and organizations must ensure that innovation does not outpace governance. Rather than viewing security and compliance as barriers to innovation, speakers framed them as critical enablers of long-term adoption and credibility.
AI Has the Potential to Transform Healthcare — But Human Expertise Still Matters
AI’s growing role in healthcare generated some of the evening’s most engaging discussions. Panelists highlighted how AI is already improving operational efficiency, supporting clinical workflows, and helping healthcare organizations better analyze large volumes of patient and operational data. From reducing administrative burden to identifying trends faster, AI is increasingly becoming embedded across the healthcare ecosystem.
At the same time, speakers were clear that AI is not positioned to replace medical expertise. Instead, the future will likely center on AI augmenting clinicians rather than replacing them. The panel emphasized that healthcare remains deeply human, requiring judgment, empathy, and contextual decision-making that technology alone cannot replicate. As AI adoption accelerates, organizations will need to focus not only on capability, but also on accountability, transparency, and maintaining appropriate human oversight.
Breaking Down Data Silos Requires Collaboration and Governance
Another major conversation centered on the challenges created by fragmented healthcare data systems. Panelists noted that valuable patient and operational data often remains isolated across organizations, platforms, and departments, limiting collaboration and slowing innovation. Improving interoperability and secure data-sharing was identified as a critical next step for the industry, particularly as healthcare systems seek to deliver more coordinated and personalized care.
Speakers also stressed that strong governance practices are necessary to make better collaboration possible. Effective governance goes beyond policies and paperwork — it requires clear accountability, operational discipline, and ongoing alignment between technology, compliance, and patient care priorities. Looking ahead, the panel predicted that healthcare organizations that successfully balance innovation with governance and trust will be best positioned to lead the next era of digital healthcare transformation.
